Naalala ko lang na may group of pastors who are discussing amongst themselves. May nagtanong kung ano nga ba ang pinaka-unique sa Christianity na hindi mo makikita sa ibang religion. Mainit ang kanilang pag-uusap at humahaba ang kanilang talakayan nang may pumasok na isang pastor at nagtanong ng, “Ano ba iyang pinag-uusapan ninyo?” One of them responded, “Actually, pinag-iisipan namin kung ano ba ang unique sa Christianity na hindi makikita at itinuturo sa ibang relgion.” Mabilis ang sagot ng pastor na kararating lang, “Ah, madali lang iyan, eh di ‘grace’ wala silang turo tungkol sa ‘grace.’” 

This is very true. Ang problema sa mga kulto ng Christianity ay kahit na sabihin nilang “grace” is being taught in the Bible ay hindi pa rin nila matanggap ang katotohanan na grace means unmerited favor. Hindi nila lubos na maintindihan kung papaanong ang kaligtasan ay hindi sa pamamagitan ng good works kundi by grace through faith in Christ alone (see Eph. 2:8-9)  

Most probably, si Mr. Eliseo Soriano na speaker ng programang Ang Dating Daan ang isa na sa mga sinusundan ng maraming mga Pilipino dahil sa galing niyang magtagpi-tagpi ng mga verses ng Bible. Siyempre, hindi niya kayang madala ang mga may alam sa Scripture lalo na yung mga may background sa pag-aara ng Salita ng Diyos. Ang kaya lang niyang madala at ma-convince sa kaniyang mga paliwanag ay yung mga walang gaanong alam na magpaliwanag ng mga bagay-bagay sa Bible. 

So ano ba ang turo ni Mr. Soriano tungkol sa gospel? Kasi may nagtanong sa kaniya one time kung ano daw ba ang kaligtasan. At eto ang sagot niya sa ibaba. I made a transcript of it below so you can carefully read every word he said.      

“Ang ikaliligtas, yung ipinangaral ni Cristo, yung ebanghelyo. Yun ang ikaliligtas. Yung ebanghelyo nandun lahat ng aral ni Cristo kung paano kang magdadamit, nasa ebanghelyo. Paano ka kakain, nasa ebanghelyo. Paano ka magiging isang mabuting asawa, nasa ebanghelyo. Paano mo palalakihin ang iyong anak, nasa ebanghelyo. Paano ang anak makikisama sa magulang nasa ebanghelyo. Lahat ng aral ni Cristo, yun ang ikaliligtas natin. Pati yung iglesia na nasa ebanghelyo, yun ang ikaliligtas mo. “Lahat niung aral pagsamasamahin mo, ang ipinangangaral ni Cristo, ang ipinangangaral ng apostol, ebanghelyo, yun ang ikaliligtas.”  Alipiing Walang Kabuluhan, “Ano ang Tunay na Kaligtasan,” Aug. 2, 2020.

Now, napansin ninyo? Tama na sana siya nung sinabi niyang, “Ang ikaliligtas, yung ipinangaral ni Cristo, yung ebanghelyo. Yun ang ikaliligtas.” Kaso yung paliwanag niya ang sumabit. Pansinin mo na binanggit niyang yung pananamit, pagkain, pagiging mabuti, paanong magpalaki ng mga anak, paanong makikisama sa magulang, at ultimo iglesia, ang lahat daw nang ito ay napapaloob sa ebanghelyo. Oh my goodness! Hindi po ito gospel kundi good works na po ito mga kaibigan. Oo nga’t nag-quote siya ng mga ilang passage pero inilalayo pa rin niya sa tamang interpretation ang mga tao para maipilipit niya ito sa kaniyang gustong paliwanag. Ganiyan naman talaga ang mga cults of Christianity. They will avoid the obvious truth because it will surely expose their false teachings. 

Si Mr. Soriano kasi pag nagpaliwanag ng Bible ay walang pakialam sa culture, biblical language, geography, at history ng Bible. Oo, maaaring sa iba niyang paliwanag meron siyang ginagamitan, pero hindi lahat. At kapag hindi niya ito ginamita ng tamang paliwanag or hermeneutics, dito niya ngayon napapaikot ang mga pobreng nakikinig sa kaniya para mailigaw niya papalayo sa tamang paliwanag. Alam niya kasi na hindi mag-a-agree ang mga Bible scholars sa kaniyang paliwanag. 

Para mas maintindihan natin ang background ng gospel (good news) ay mas magandang pag-aralan natin ang background nito. Actually, may tinatawag nang good news noon bago pa man tumapak ang New Testament. The pagans and the Jewish people each have their own interpretation of the good news. Pagdating sa mga Israelites, ang good news sa kanila ay yung pag-proclaim na Yahweh defeated their pagan enemies, tinapos na Niya yung exile ng Kaniyang mga anak, at inestablished na Niya ang kaniyang kaharian. Mas tugma ito sa konteksto ng New Testament. Sabi nga sa verse sa ibaba,

Go on up to a high mountain, O Zion, herald of good news; lift up your voice with strength, O Jerusalem, herald of good news; lift it up, fear not; say to the cities of Judah, “Behold your God!” – Isaiah 40:9

Ito yung time na ide-deliver sila ni Lord from the Babylonian captivity by using a Cyrus, a Persian ruler. Basahin mo ito,

Isa 41:25, “I have raised up someone from the north, and he has come. He will call on my name from the east. He will attack rulers as if they were mud, as if he were treading on clay like a potter. Isa 41:26, Who revealed this from the beginning so that we could know it? Who revealed this from the past so that we could say that he was right? No one revealed it. No one announced it. No one heard your words. Isa 41:27, I was the first to tell Zion, ‘Look, here they are.’ I gave Jerusalem a messenger with the good news. – Isaiah 41:25-27, Good News Bible

O, di ba good news iyan para sa mga Israelites who were captivated for many years? May sinabi uli si Isaiah tungkol dito na good news, 

Isa 61:1, The Sovereign LORD has filled me with his Spirit. He has chosen me and sent me To bring good news to the poor, To heal the broken-hearted, To announce release to captives And freedom to those in prison. Isa 61:2, He has sent me to proclaim That the time has come When the LORD will save his people And defeat their enemies. He has sent me to comfort all who mourn,” – Isaiah 61:1-2, Good News Bible

Although sinabi ito ni Isaiah, this is the very words of the Messian, the Lord Jesus who applied this good news to Himself (see Luke 4:17-21). The noun euangelion originally means a declaration of victory pagkatapos ng laban noong mga panahong iyon. Sa background ng mga pagano naman ay may nakitang inscription na galing sa Priene sa Asia Minor na sinulat marahil noong mga 9BC na dine-describe yung pagiging hari ni Augustus bilang isang new emperor na sinasabi nilang tagapagligtas daw na magdadala ng peace. At ang isa pa, yung birthday niya ay sinasabing simula daw ng “glad tidings (euangelion) na dumating sa mga tao. Ito ang isang example ng emperor worship sa religious context. Siyempre, ang katotohanan ng lahat ng ito ay natupad kay Hesukristo.        

Kapag kinumpara mo ang paganong paggamit ng euangelion at yung sa nakasulat sa Septuagint, yung Greek translation ng Old Testament, ay masasabi mo talagang may pagkakahawig na mayroong wino-worship na hari ang mga Israelita. Sa katunayan, yung gospel at and pag-confess na si Jesus ay Lord ay upang tapatan ang claim ni Caesar bilang Lord, at i-declare na sa krus at Kaniyang pisikal na pagkabuhay si Jesus ay ma-enthrone or mailuklok na King of kings. Itong sina Caesar na nagsasabing “Lord” daw sila ay yuyuko pagdating ng panahon sa ipinako at nabuhay na Jesus. Kaya nga ang sabi ni Paul, ang gospel ay ang pagkamatay, pagkalibing, at pagkabuhay ni Jesus never ang good works na sinasabi ni Mr. Soriano. Basahin ninyo ito,

1Co 15:2, And now I want to remind you, my friends, of the Good News which I preached to you, which you received, and on which your faith stands firm. 1Co 15:2, That is the gospel, the message that I preached to you. You are saved by the gospel if you hold firmly to it—unless it was for nothing that you believed. 1Co 15:3, I passed on to you what I received, which is of the greatest importance: that Christ died for our sins, as written in the Scriptures; 1Co 15:4, that he was buried and that he was raised to life three days later, as written in the Scriptures; 1Co 15:5, that he appeared to Peter and then to all twelve apostles. 1Co 15:6 Then he appeared to more than five hundred of his followers at once, most of whom are still alive, although some have died. 1Co 15:7, Then he appeared to James, then to all the apostles. 1Co 15:8, Last of all, as to one untimely born, he appeared also to me. – 1 Corinthians 15:1-6, ESV

Napansin mo ba na ilang ulit na sinabi ni Paul diyan yung mga salitang “he appeared” na binanggit ni Paul ng apat na beses. Ibig sabihin, ito ang talagang good news or gospel, na si Lord Jesus ay nabuhay sa mga patay at nagpakita mismo kay Peter, sa mga twelve apostles, sa mga mahigit na five hundred Niyang followers, kay James, sa mga apostles, at kay Paul mismo. .  Pansinin mo din na ang sulat ni Paul kay Peter,

Remember Jesus Christ, risen from the dead, the offspring of David, as preached in my gospel, – 2 Timothy 2:8, ESV

Sabi ni Paul ang resurrection ni Jesus ay napapaloob sa kaniyang gospel narrative. At sa sulat ni Paul sa mga taga-Philippians ay nagde-declare na si Jesus ay Lord, isang declaration ng victory. 

Phi 2:10, so that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, Phi 2:11, and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father. – Philippians 2:10-11, ESV

Kaya nga ang gospel na ito ay nagde-declare ng glory ni Jesus Christ at ng Kaniyang pagiging Lord na napagtagumpayan Niya ang kamatayan. 

2Co 4:3, And even if our gospel is veiled, it is veiled to those who are perishing. 2Co 4:4, In their case the god of this world has blinded the minds of the unbelievers, to keep them from seeing the light of the gospel of the glory of Christ, who is the image of God. 2Co 4:5, For what we proclaim is not ourselves, but Jesus Christ as Lord, with ourselves as your servants for Jesus’ sake.- 2 Corinthians 4:3-5, ESV

Ito ang gospel na hindi natin dapat ikahiya dahil it is the power of God sa ikaliligtas ng lahat. Sabi nga ni Paul, 

For I am not ashamed of the gospel, for it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes, to the Jew first and also to the Greek. – Romans 1:16, ESV

Ang gospel ay hindi lamang naglalaman ng impormasyon tungkol sa mga nangyari kay Jesus, yung kamatayan sa krus, at Kaniyang pagkabuhay but this is the power of God for the salvation or sa ikaliligtas ng sinumang manampalataya kay Jesus bilang Panginoon at Tagapagligtas. Kaya mali po si Mr. Soirano sa kaniyang pagpapaliwanag na ang gospel ay “good works.” Ang “gospel” ni Mr. Soriano ay “another gospel” na binanggit ni Paul sa mga believers ahead of time. Ang sulat niya ay ganito, 

Gal 1:6, I am astonished that you are so quickly deserting him who called you in the grace of Christ and are turning to a different gospel— Gal 1:7, not that there is another one, but there are some who trouble you and want to distort the gospel of Christ. Gal 1:8, But even if we or an angel from heaven should preach to you a gospel contrary to the one we preached to you, let him be accursed. – Galatians 1:6-8, ESV

This teaching of Mr. Soriano is a lie from spiritual enemy. The gospel is not a “gospel of good works” it is the gospel of God’s grace (unmerited favor) na nagmumula kay Jesus Christ.   

But I do not account my life of any value nor as precious to myself, if only I may finish my course and the ministry that I received from the Lord Jesus, to testify to the gospel of the grace of God. – Acts 20:24
